Thangelstedt Castle

In the 15th century, the old castle was built as a manor house and sold in 1488 by Count von Gleichen-Blankenhain to the von Bünau family. The already mentioned Christoph Friedrich von Thangel, Princely Councillor and Master of the Hunt in Weimar, acquired the knight's estate in 1681 for 5000 guilders. At the beginning of the 20th century, the property was acquired by Baron von Gross, in whose family ownership it is once again today.

The original building from the 15th century was a simple, yet stately manor house, typical for its time. Over the centuries, the building underwent several significant changes. In the 17th century, under Christoph Friedrich von Thangel, extensive renovations and extensions were carried out, which gave the castle its baroque character. During this period, the impressive main portal and the ornate stucco ceilings in the representative rooms were created.

Further modifications took place in the 19th century, when the castle was partially redesigned in the neo-Gothic style. Elements such as pointed arch windows and battlements were added, which gave the building a romantic, castle-like appearance. Despite these changes, the historical layers of the different eras are still clearly visible today and contribute to the unique charm of the building.

The history of the castle is closely linked to the noble families who owned and inhabited it. After the von Bünau family, who owned the castle for almost two centuries, Christoph Friedrich von Thangel marked a golden age. He not only invested in the structural development but also in the surrounding lands, which significantly increased the importance of the knight's estate.

In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times, including to various aristocratic families who each left their mark. The acquisition by Baron von Gross at the beginning of the 20th century brought a period of stability and careful preservation. It is particularly noteworthy that the property is now back in the possession of the von Gross family, which underlines the deep historical connection.

Today, the historic building serves as a vibrant cultural centre and museum. Parts of the castle are open to the public and house a permanent exhibition on the history of the building and its former residents. Regular special exhibitions present regional art and historical topics. The former ballroom is now used for concerts, readings, and theatre performances, making the castle a central meeting point for cultural events in the region.

In addition to its function as a museum, the castle is also a popular venue for private and public events. The historic premises offer a unique setting for weddings, jubilees, and corporate events. The castle park, carefully maintained and restored, is also available for outdoor events and offers a picturesque backdrop for any occasion.

The preservation of the historic building is a continuous task. Extensive restoration work is regularly carried out to maintain the structural integrity and historical authenticity of the castle. These measures are supported by public funds, private donations, and the commitment of the von Gross family. Future plans include the restoration of further historical rooms and the expansion of the museum area to make even more aspects of the castle's rich history accessible to the public.

The castle also offers various educational programmes for schools and interested groups. These programmes aim to convey history in an interactive and engaging way and to awaken an understanding of cultural heritage. Guided tours, workshops, and project days are part of the regular offerings, which are very popular with young and old alike.
