Surenburg Castle (Riesenbeck)

The Surenburg is located in Riesenbeck, a district of the city of Hörstel. It is the most famous moated castle in the Tecklenburger Land.
There are no documented records about its origins. It is presumed that it was founded as a manor house after the conquest of Bevergern by the Bishop of Münster in 1400.
It was first mentioned in a document in 1474 as the residence of the Lords of Langen.
In 1612, it came into the possession of the House of Münster.
In 1786, Carl Heinrich Heereman von Zuydtwyck, a landed nobleman from Roermond in the Netherlands, purchased it. His descendants, such as Constantin Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck, still inhabit it today.
