Sundbyholm Castle

The origins of Sundbyholm date back to the Middle Ages, when the estate belonged to the Order of St. John monastery in Eskilstuna. In 1527, the property became part of the Swedish Crown. It gained particular importance in 1629, when Field Marshal Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm established a school there at his own expense, considered Sweden's first public school, which operated until 1987. Under Lord High Treasurer Seved Bååth, the castle was expanded by three floors. From the early 18th century, Sundbyholm experienced frequent changes of ownership. A fire on Christmas Eve 1774 damaged the building. Gustav August Coyet significantly contributed to the estate's development by purchasing an additional 100 hectares of land and creating a park and avenues. In 1819, Baron Salomon Löfvensköld took over the property and replaced the then-dilapidated castle with a manor-like building. In the 1890s, Prince Eugen immortalized the castle in his painting "The Old Castle." The series of ownership changes continued until the city of Eskilstuna acquired the castle in 1939 and converted it into a conference venue.
