Sulzfeld Castle

The castle in Sulzfeld adjoins the fortified church to the west. It is first mentioned in 1520 as a Würzburg male fief of Count Wilhelm von Henneberg.

The residential building still standing today was built in 1526, as can be read on the lintel of the front window of the western oriel.
It is a two-story early Renaissance complex with a high gabled roof. The pointed-arch entrance portal is on the northwest side. Here, on the first floor, there are also two charming rectangular oriels.

From 1548-52, the cemetery fortification was built as an outer bailey, its defensive wall still about 4 m high and having supporting arcades closed in round arches on the village side, which certainly once carried a battlement on the wall. Further alterations took place at the castle in 1631 and 1663, as indicated by the year numbers on the cellar window and the kennel portal.

The castle was the seat of the Henneberg Office of Sulzfeld. When Sulzfeld fell to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg in 1583 after the extinction of the Hennebergers, the Würzburg Office of Wildberg was moved to Sulzfeld, where the Würzburg Amtskellerei "Sulzfeld unter Wildberg" was now housed in the castle. After its dissolution in 1804, the castle was the seat of the state forest administration of Sulzfeld until 1970. After serving as a recreation home for the Arbeiterwohlfahrt until 1990, it has been in private ownership ever since.
