Steinach Castle
In 1699, master smelter and mine surveyor Johann von Uttenhoven, who came from the Ore Mountains, acquired the hammer mills of Obersteinach and settled 60 Saxon worker families in Oberdorf. In 1717/1718, he had a representative residential building, the old castle on Steinheider Berg, erected. In 1747, master smelter Johann Tobias Otto began the construction of the new castle, the "Ottenhof". A mill for the production of marbles was built in 1769. In 1799, Steinach received the right to hold annual markets twice a year.
In 1844, the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen acquired the mines and smelters. For the workers, this ended their serfdom-like dependence on the master smelters.
Today, the castle serves as a Slate Museum.
