Steegen Castle

Steegen Castle is located in the municipality of Steegen in the district of Grieskirchen in the Hausruckviertel region of Upper Austria.

The noble estate of Steegen is mentioned in a chronicle as early as the eleventh century. The first documented mention of Steegen Castle occurred in 1371. The owners at that time were the Hieber family; how they came into possession of Steegen is unknown. What is known, however, is the sale in 1696 by Johann Achaz Hieber to Count Heinrich Johann von Strattmann. He had no legitimate children at the time of his death, and so Steegen fell to the Peuerbach line of the Strattmann family. After the dissolution of the Peuerbach Fideikommiss in 1825, Steegen was separated from the property complex and became available for sale. From 1826 to 1930, Steegen was owned by the Eisterer family. The Steegen Castle Brewery was also located here between 1831 and 1882. The Raiffeisenbank Peuerbach, founded in 1923 as "Vorschusskassenverein Steegen for the Peuerbach-Land parish district," was located in Steegen Castle and Brewery until 1928.
