Steckborn Castle

The Turmhof in Steckborn, also known as the "Steckborn Castle", is a historic building whose origins date back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous changes of ownership and structural alterations, reflecting the eventful history of the region.

Key historical data:

• 1221 The Lords of Steckborn appear for the first time in documents of the bailiffs.
• In the 14th century, Emperor Henry VII, former Count of Luxembourg and successor to Albert I of Habsburg, who was murdered in 1308, followed the request of Diethelm von Castell, Abbot of Reichenau and Petershausen, and authorized Steckborn in 1313 to hold a market every Thursday. He thus created the conditions that transformed the village into a town. At this time, Abbot Diethelm decided to build the "Turmhof" within the town.
• In the 14th century, a reconstruction took place under Abbot Werner von Rosenegg.
• In 1521, it briefly came into the possession of the seven Swiss cantons, who had ruled over Thurgau since 1460.
• In 1583, ownership changed for the second time to the Deucher family of Steckborn.
• In 1642, Ulrich Deucher, owner of the "Löwen" hotel and owner of the tower, sold it to the town.
• In 1902, the town donated the "Turmhof" to the Evangelical community, which is still the owner today.
• In 1934, the castle was restored and now houses a museum.
