Stammheim Castle

Stammheim Castle in Stammheim, part of Florstadt in the Wetterau district of Hesse, is an early modern castle complex, presumably developed from an earlier moated castle.

The castle is located on the site of an earlier moated castle, whose exact age is unknown. When the complex is first documented in the 15th century, it was in the possession of the Lords of Rosenbach, a noble family also attested among the co-heirs of the neighboring Lindheim Castle near Altenstadt. The Lords of Rosenbach frequently held ecclesiastical offices and served in Mainz or Würzburg.

Dietrich von Rosenbach began constructing a small castle in place of the old one in 1587. He did not live to see its completion in 1592, as noted in the portal, as he died in 1590. Due to property disputes, the Lords of Rosenbach sold their property in 1699 to the Lords of Schlitz, also known as von Görtz. After various changes of ownership, the municipality bought the castle in 1850 and established school rooms and a council chamber within it. Later, it was inhabited by refugees and fell into disrepair. A few years ago, Stammheim Castle was acquired by a private individual and exemplary renovated.
