St. Jakob Castle

The so-called "Tower of St. Jakob" presumably dates from the 12th or 13th century. It was the seat of the Salzburg ministerial family of Thurn. In 1538, a Jörg Khnoll is mentioned as administrator "zum Thurn". In 1572, an Andree Pleialter "zum Thurn in der Hofmark" dies. In 1647, Johann von Plaz received the vacant Salzburg fiefdom in St. Jakob am Thurn after the death of Alexander Hieronymus Freiherr von Thurn zu Neubeuern. The Plaz family was elevated to the rank of count in 1696. The Plaz are today the only remaining Salzburg noble family. In 1869, the knight's fief was allodified.

In 1924, the lordship of St. Jakob was sold to the Danish Charlotte von Bornemann, married Wurmbrand-Stuppach. By order of the Gestapo, the building was incorporated into the Reichsgau Salzburg in 1939. In 1947, ownership was returned to the former owner. The tower remains in private ownership today.
