Spreewiese Castle

In 1553, the noble family von Nostitz, based in Lusatia, acquired the manor and erected the Renaissance castle here in 1557. It is a closed four-wing building with a small inner courtyard. In 1729, Friedrich Caspar Graf von Gersdorff rebuilt the castle. The former Renaissance gables fell victim to this reconstruction. A coat of arms on the portal still bears this name today. Childless, he bequeathed the estate to Hans Heinrich von Zezschwitz. The latter sold the castle in 1754. Now the owners changed more frequently. Before its expropriation in 1945, the castle belonged to a Sachsse family. The name Spreewiese for the tranquil small town in Lusatia north of Bautzen is still quite young. Only in 1911 was the old place name abolished by an initiative of the then manor owner Franz Sachsse. Until then, Spreewiese was still called Leichnam. In 1945, the owners were expropriated and expelled by the communists.

The castle is surrounded by a magnificent park. In 1997, Paul Wehrle-Nielsen acquired the property, after it had served as an apartment building in the GDR. The castle is now wonderfully renovated. The inner courtyard is enclosed by a glass roof.
