Spiez Castle

Spiez Castle is a castle in Spiez on Lake Thun in the Swiss canton of Bern. The lower part of the keep dates from the 10th century. The castle was originally owned by the Barons of Strättligen, and from 1338 by the Bubenberg family. In 1516, it passed to the Erlach family, who resided here until 1875. The ballroom features early Baroque stucco work by Ticinese artists from 1614. From 1875 to 1900, Hermann Karl von Wilke, grandfather of Tilo von Wilmowsky, was the owner. Since 1927, the castle has been owned by a foundation.

The early Romanesque castle church, formerly dedicated to Saint Columbanus, was founded by King Rudolf II of Upper Burgundy and subordinated to the mother church of Einigen. Sigmund von Erlach is buried here.
