Spielberg Castle

Spielberg Castle, also known as Arbesser Castle, is located in the municipality of Spielberg in the Murtal district in Austria. Arbesser Castle was built in 1570. The castle gave its name to the surrounding municipality. Around 1575, only the dominion around the castle was called Spielberg; later, the castle gave its name to the entire municipality. The actual origin of the name Spielberg is unclear. The administrator correspondence found in the castle a few decades ago is one of the most revealing sources about rural conditions in Upper Styria in the mid-18th century.
Noble Families+
The history of the castle is also linked to the development of several noble families, including the Teufenbachers, the Heinrichspers, and the Lachawitz. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the castle has been owned by the Arbesser-Rastburg family.
