Schloss Schönstein: A Jewel in the Sieg Valley+
History and Architecture+

Schloss Schönstein, majestically situated on a rock above the town of Wissen, is one of the best-preserved castles in the Rhineland. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when it was built as a defensive castle by the Counts of Sayn. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous structural changes and expansions, reflecting the respective architectural styles.

The core of the castle consists of a Romanesque keep, which was later integrated into the residential buildings. In the late Middle Ages, the castle was expanded into a mighty fortress with ring walls, towers, and a moat. During the Renaissance, the castle was transformed into a residential palace, with magnificent halls and chambers being added. The Baroque period also left its mark, particularly in the interior design.

The Counts of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg+

The castle was built in 1563 and has been owned by the Counts of Hatzfeld-Wildenburg from the Wildenburger Land since 1872.

The Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg family, an old German noble family, acquired Schloss Schönstein in the late 19th century. Under their ownership, the castle was extensively renovated and restored, with great emphasis placed on preserving its historical character. The family still inhabits the castle today and actively contributes to its preservation and cultural life.

Current Use and Public Access+

Schloss Schönstein is still privately owned and inhabited by the princely family of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg. For this reason, the interior of the castle is not accessible to the public. However, the castle chapel is open to visitors on certain occasions, such as church services or cultural events.

The castle courtyard and the surrounding park are freely accessible and invite visitors to take a stroll. From here, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sieg Valley and the surrounding landscape. Regular events, such as medieval festivals or Christmas markets, take place in the castle courtyard, attracting numerous visitors.

Significance for the Region+

Schloss Schönstein is not only a historically significant monument but also an important cultural and tourist attraction for the Sieg Valley region. It contributes significantly to the identity of the town of Wissen and the surrounding area. The castle is a popular destination for excursions and offers visitors a unique insight into the history and architecture of the Rhineland.
