Skaugum Castle

The origins of the Skaugum estate date back to the Middle Ages. In 1929, the property was transferred into the private ownership of the Norwegian royal family by Baron Fritz Wedel Jarlsberg, on the occasion of Crown Prince Olav's marriage to Märtha of Sweden. After the original main house was destroyed by fire in May 1930, a new building was constructed according to the plans of architect Arnstein Arneberg and completed in 1932. During World War II, Skaugum served as the residence for Reichskommissar Josef Terboven. On the day of the Wehrmacht's surrender, May 8, 1945, Terboven took his own life on the premises. King Olav V resided at Skaugum until 1968, before it passed to his son, Crown Prince Harald V, who took possession of it on the occasion of his marriage to Sonja Haraldsen. Today, it is the residence of Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit.

Skaugum Palace is situated in Asker, a municipality in the Akershus district in the Østlandet region of Norway. It is located at an elevation of approximately 198 meters above sea level.

Today, Skaugum Palace serves as the official residence of the Norwegian Crown Prince couple. The ground floor is used for representative purposes, while the upper floors serve as private living quarters. The estate is not publicly accessible and is guarded by the Norwegian Royal Guard. The estate includes 48 hectares of cultivated land and 50 hectares of forest.
