Sinning Castle

Sinning Castle is a Baroque castle in the municipality of Oberhausen, located about ten kilometers southwest of Neuburg an der Donau.

The three-story castle was built around 1660 in the Renaissance style by Franz Freiherr von Giese on the edge of an offshoot of the Donaumoos, where the ruins of an old moated castle probably still stood. When the von Giese family died out in the male line, Freiherr Wilhelm Adam von Weveld took over the castle in 1721 for 9,750 guilders, which he expanded in 1727 to the north and east with a two-story Baroque wing in the French style. In 1830, Johann Baptist Freiherr von Weveld, administrator of the forced labor house in Munich-Au since 1807, established a brickworks, a nursery, and a brewery on the estates around the castle, thus transforming the complex into an industrial agricultural enterprise. This made the Freiherr, who also trained young farmers, the largest employer in the entire area. In the wake of Black Friday in 1929, the von Weveld family ran into financial difficulties. The National Socialist regime forced Heribert Freiherr von Weveld into compulsory debt relief by selling the so-called Weveldhaus in Neuburg an der Donau.

The castle is still family-owned today. In addition to concerts and other events, castle tours are offered, and the large park is used for medieval markets.
