Sigharting Castle

Sigharting Castle in Sigharting in the Innviertel region was built in 1570 by Hector von Pürching as a moated castle, replacing an earlier structure, and initially served as the manorial seat of the Sigharting Hofmark. However, the moat was filled in as early as the 18th century. It is a three-story square building measuring 23 x 23 meters. Inside, there is a remarkable arcaded courtyard, decorated on two floors with the coats of arms of the Lords of Pürching and their wives.

After the Pürching family died out, the castle passed to Count Hans Adolph von Tattenbach zu St. Martin on September 7, 1639, who had most of the furniture auctioned off. Subsequently, the building merely housed the manorial administrator and hunter. In 1870, the castle was finally acquired by the municipality of Sigharting for 3000 guilders, as various basic functions of the village were housed in the castle from the 19th century onwards. It housed the municipal office from 1850 to 1950, the elementary school from 1837 to 1970, and the gendarmerie from 1936 to 1950. Today, the castle serves as a local history museum and a cultural center for various concerts and exhibitions.
