Sierning Castle

Sierning Castle is located in the municipality of Sierning in the Upper Austrian district of Steyr-Land (Hochstraße 2).

The castle was a Passau manorial seat and emerged from the former rectory belonging to the cathedral chapter. The renovation was completed in 1588 by canons Georg Gotthardt and Johann von Tattenböck. In 1611, the town and castle of Sierning were captured by Passau troops under their commander Ramee. During the Peasants' War, Stefan Fadinger had his seat here. From here, he arranged with the city judge of Steyr, Madlseder, for the surrender of the city without a fight. From 1754 until the secularization of 1803, Sierning was owned by the Passau Cathedral Chapter. In 1803, it came into the possession of the Austrian state, became an imperial and royal cameral estate in 1805, and was declared property of the imperial court in 1805. In 1827, Legation Secretary Theodor Ritter von Kast bought the Sierning estate. In 1850, it passed to Llewellyn Freiherr von Kast. In 1880, Sophie Baronin von Kast followed, and from 1895–1935, Michael Baron von Kast. From him, it was sold to the innkeeper Krennhuber.

The dilapidated castle was finally bought by the municipality of Sierning in 1969 and renovated by the Traunviertel Cultural Association and the municipality of Sierning.
