Seisenegg Castle
Not far from the district capital Amstetten in the municipality of Viehdorf lies Seisenegg Castle.
Already verifiable as a double castle complex in the 13th century, Seisenegg came into the possession of the Lords of Walsee in 1305 as an important traffic hub between the Danube and the Ybbsfeld. Until their extinction in 1483, they had the castle administered by caretakers. This period also saw the significant expansion of the castle with the mighty keep and the two-story castle chapel with its extensive fresco cycle.
As a place of Baroque aristocratic culture, the castle, transformed into a habitable palace in the 17th century, became an important center of Protestant culture in Lower Austria through the poet Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg in connection with Schallaburg Castle near Melk.
The Imperial Barons of Risenfels owned the castle from the 17th to the 20th century. Melanie von Risenfels (1898-1984) was married to Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria-Tuscany.
Current Use+
Since 2005, the castle has housed a cultural center and a registry office, thus offering a romantic setting for celebrations and weddings.
