Seedorf Castle (Noréaz)

The lordship of Saydor (Seedorf) was first mentioned in 1156. In 1448, the castle was set ablaze during a conflict between Fribourgers and Bernese. Later, in 1584, Josse Fégely owned a small, walled castle in Seedorf. Archaeological finds from 1978, including remnants of fortifications and medieval artifacts, attest to early settlement. The Féguely-Seedorf family owned the estate from the 16th century until 1752. Nicolas Vonderweid of Seedorf, a nephew and heir, had the castle rebuilt in the style of the French architect Mansard, with works completed in 1769. After the death of Nicolas Vonderweid in 1812, a lieutenant colonel in French service who succumbed to his injuries at the Bérézina crossing, the castle changed hands multiple times. Later owners included Nicolas Roland von Robatel and Count Ladislas von Diesbach von Belleroche. In 1900, the large estate was divided, and in 1902, a Frenchman named Jarre acquired the castle with nine hectares of land. From 1902, it served as the Institut Notre-Dame-de-Compassion for the education of mentally challenged children, a use that continued until 1974 when it was converted into a continuing education center.

Seedorf Castle is located in Noréaz in the Saane district of the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It stands at an elevation of approx. 636 m above sea level.

Today, Seedorf Castle houses a continuing education center. The historic building is thus still in use and accessible.
