Seebarn Castle

The locality of Seebarn is first mentioned in 1140. The Schenken von Seebarn are considered the builders of the former fortified structure. They are documented here since 1339 and presumably held the castle as a fief of the Wallseer. With Hans der Schenk, the family died out between 1455 and 1457. Seebarn came into the possession of his cousin Hans Zeller around 1488. In 1540, the knight Pankraz Raiger appears as the owner.

Around 1590, the fortified structure, already converted into a manor, belonged to the Straub zu Thürnthal family. Two years later, it was already in the possession of the Barons von Auersperg. In 1664, Seebarn, then called Oberseebarn, came into the possession of the Counts von Verdenberg, who had owned the village of Unterseebarn since 1628. The related Counts Enckevoirt became the lords of the castle from 1688. They united Seebarn with their neighboring lordship of Grafenegg. Both estates subsequently came as inheritance to the Princes Metternich-Sandor.

In 1945, the castle buildings were severely damaged by acts of war. After the Second World War, the worst damages were repaired. The poorly maintained building was primarily used for agricultural purposes. A few years ago, Mrs. Dkfm. Melitta Kabele acquired it. The building was restored in 2005 and has been inhabited ever since.
