Schweickershausen Castle

The municipality was first mentioned in 1317 as Schwichershusin. As early as 1340, the municipality was called Schweickershausen. It can be assumed that a castle or palace already existed in the village at that time. The village was owned by the von Schaumberg family and was sold in 1469 to Hartung Truchseß von Wetzhausen zu Sternberg. He and his descendants have since called themselves Truchsess von Schweickershausen. In 1703, the current castle was built, which served as a forester's residence from 1851. The property changed hands in 1885 to Freiherr von Munsigerode - Rositten, in 1919 to Henry von Düring, and in 1941 to Meinel von Tannenberg. The latter was dispossessed and expelled by the communists in 1945. Subsequently, border troops were quartered in the castle. Later it served as an outpost of the Hildburghausen District Hospital. In 1998, it was converted and opened as a school country home. Since 2006, the castle has been used as an inn.
