Schwandegg Castle
Schwandegg Castle is located on a 30-meter high hill northwest of the village of Waltalingen in the Canton of Zurich.
The noble family of Schwandegg is first mentioned in 1288. Knight Heinrich von Schwandegg is attested as a follower of the House of Habsburg. In 1413, the family died out. The castle passed to Hans von Münchwil, in 1470 to the family von Schönau, in 1502 to Gregorius von Roggwil, chief bailiff of Constance, in 1537 to the farmer Anton Hermann, under whom the complex increasingly fell into disrepair.
In 1553, the mayor of Constance, Thomas Blarer, bought it. After that, the castle changed hands several times. In 1677, it belonged to Hans Caspar Escher, in 1770 to the Zurich cavalry captain Hans Konrad Bürkli. Again, several changes of ownership followed.
In 1933, the northwest wing burned down. In 1974, the Canton of Zurich bought Schwandegg and restored the castle. Today, it houses a restaurant.
