Schwallenbach Castle

In 1170, the settlement is first mentioned as Suelinpach. The first known lords of the castle are Engelschalcus and Chunradus de Swelpach in 1243. In 1266, a Haedwinus de Swelnpach is named. He and his successors were feudal tenants of the Dukes of Bavaria, to whom the area was granted by Niederaltaich Abbey around the middle of the 13th century. In 1300, Poppo von Grünberg sold the lordship to Ulrich the Elder von Kapellen. Later, the Bavarian dukes pledged their Schwallenbach fiefdom to Seyfried Ritzendorfer. His wife Anna had brought the sub-fief into the marriage in 1420.

After his death, Jörg Scheck von Aggstein and the brothers Hans and Michael Schratt are named as Bavarian feudal tenants. In 1463, the troops of George of Podiebrad burned down the town and the castle. Both, however, were soon rebuilt. In 1504, the Habsburgs succeeded in incorporating the previously extraterritorial area into their dominion. Schwallenbach was sold to the Kirchbergers. In 1590, it became the property of the Kuefstein family. The medieval castle received its current appearance at the beginning of the 17th century, when it was converted into a more habitable complex by Anna von Polheim. In 1871, the lordship came to the Vienna Bürgerspitalfonds.

Later private owners ran the inn "Das Glöckerl von Schwallenbach" here until 1960. Since then, the building has served only as a residence and belongs to the Viennese art dealer Reinhold Hofstätter.
