Schongau Castle

Schongau Castle was built in the 13th century. In 1493, it burned down and was subsequently rebuilt. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it served the Wittelsbach rulers as a secondary residence. On the south facade, one can still see today the fresco of Duke Christoph the Strong. He was the lord of the castle from 1490 to 1493. Later, the building housed the seat of the district judge of Schongau. Afterwards, the district office was accommodated in the former castle, and then until 1972, it was the district administration office of the Weilheim-Schongau district. Today, the district administration office of the Weilheim-Schongau district is located in the building. In the years 1771/1772, the former Schongau Castle was redesigned. On the square in front of the castle is the monument to Franz Josef Strauss. His political career began here in the district administration office of Schongau in 1945.
