Schönburg Castle

Schönburg Castle is a castle in Schönburg, a district of the city of Pocking in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau.

Nothing remains of the medieval complex of the Lords of Schönburg, which was originally located here. Between 1676 and 1680, as the inscription in the passage hall proclaims, Baron Georg Adolf von Schönburg erected the present manor house. The same builder then had the Gothic castle chapel converted into a Baroque castle church, today's parish church of the Schönburg parish, between 1682 and 1686, and connected the church to the castle by a two-story arcaded walkway.

The Barons of Closen zu Gern and Arnstorf, as successors to the Schönburgs, built the elongated gatehouse around the middle of the 18th century. The successors of the Closens were the Counts of Leyden. Countess Melanie von Leyden, née Countess Montjoye, had the castle restored in 1842. In 1876, the Counts of Arco-Zinneberg bought Schönburg Castle. In 1879, Countess Mechtilde was born here, who became known as a writer under the name Mechtilde Lichnowsky after her marriage to the imperial diplomat Karl Max von Lichnowsky. The current owner is Peter Mühlbauer, who received the HypoKulturstiftung Munich Monument Prize in 1996.
