Schmieheim Castle

The listed Schmieheim Castle near Kippenheim in the Ortenau region was built in the years 1607 to 1610 by Friedrich Bock von Gerstheim and his second wife Salomone von Fegersheim in Renaissance style. In 1812, the castle served as a lazaret for soldiers from Napoleon's campaigns, and from 1847, one of the first kindergartens in the country was housed here in Schmieheim Castle. In 1925, the municipality then bought the dilapidated castle for 10,000 Goldmark at the time. It then served until 1958 as a cellar, as a ballroom and for housing freezer units, tobacco sheds and other purposes. From 1958, the first fundamental renovation followed. Today, Schmieheim Castle is used for various purposes, among other things, the local winegrowers' cooperative has a tasting room in the vaulted cellar. With its three towers, the castle is today the landmark of Schmieheim. The picturesque castle park invites you to take a stroll and forms the backdrop for numerous festive events, such as weddings.
