Schmiding Castle
Schloss Schmiding is a former moated castle and noble residence in the municipality of Krenglbach in Upper Austria.
The Schmiding estate was first mentioned in a document in 1111, naming Menginhart von Polheim as the owner at that time. Another mention of Schloss Schmiding is known from 1220, after which the documents are silent for 200 years. In 1415, Duke Albrecht V enfeoffed Heinrich der Ofen with the estate, followed by the Innerseer family after 1430. In 1527, Stefan der Innerseer was the holder of the fief. During the Peasants' War of 1626, it was occupied by peasants. Further owners included the Reuter, the Engl, and the von Öd families. The demolition of the moated castle probably took place under the Batthyánys (1754: Theresia Countess Batthyany). In 1815, Prince Philipp Batthyany-Strattmann was the owner of the castle and the lordship. A few years later, he sold them to Alfred Prince Montenuovo.
Schloss Schmiding is a simple three-story building with barrel vaults from the 16th century and stucco-framed ceilings (around 1730).
Present Day+
In 1882, Schmiding passed into bourgeois ownership to Franz Groß and subsequently to a series of other owners. The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, named after Francis de Sales, owned the castle until 1928. In October 1928, a Mr. Hofinger acquired the Schmiding property from the Salesian missionary order. After his death in 1952, W. Höfinger followed; under him, the rubble was cleared and the pond was partially drained. During the Second World War, the house served as a military hospital and an alternative location for the Wels hospital.
In the 1960s, it was restored and converted for residential purposes. Today, the Artmann family owns the castle and established Zoo Schmiding (formerly Vogelpark Schmiding or Zoologischer Garten Schmiding) on the adjacent grounds.
