Schlachtegg Castle

Schloss Schlachtegg, also known as Rosenschloss Schlachtegg, is a two-story, two-wing complex in Gundelfingen an der Donau in the district of Dillingen an der Donau. It is surrounded by a small park and a castle wall.

The name of the castle is not derived from battle/combat as originally assumed; rather, it refers to an embankment, which becomes understandable given the castle's proximity to the Brenz river. It was transferred as a field name to the settlement. The castle was essentially built in two construction phases: The north-south wing with its stepped gable was built between 1533 and 1560, while the perpendicularly attached east-west wing dates from the first half of the 17th century. Gothic murals, discovered in 1999 during extensive renovations, suggest that the former cemetery chapel of St. Michael was integrated into the east-west wing.

The castle owners changed frequently; among others, it was owned by the comital family Preysing-Lichtenegg. Since 1995, Schloss Schlachtegg has housed an educational center for the professional associations of floristry from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Since then, it has also been called Rosenschloss Schlachtegg. Every two years, the popular castle festivals, well-known far beyond the city and district borders, take place there.
