Schechen Castle

The history of the castle dates back to the 14th century. The predecessor building of the current castle was erected by the noble family of Danel. With the death of Johann Sigmund Danel von und zu Schechen on June 5, 1628, the lineage of the Danel family ended. Descendants of the Tannel (Danel) family fled towards the end of the Thirty Years' War when the Swedes besieged Rosenheim. The castle had suffered terribly at the hands of the Swedes. All outbuildings were burned down and the manor house partially destroyed.

From the 17th century onwards, there were frequent changes of ownership. These included the Lords of Schwabach, von Reisach, von Schrenkh, Kretz, Schiestl, English Ladies Altötting, Jakob Krämer, and others.

On July 13, 1903, the brewer Georg Kaiser bought the castle at auction for 23,700 Marks. Afterwards, tenants and owners changed rapidly again. Finally, the operators of the estate were divided into tenants "Schlosswirt" (with restaurant, hall, bowling alley) and farmers (managing the agricultural operation). During a renovation around 1950, a jug with coined money was discovered in a ceiling vault. The coins bear minting years from 1670 to 1673.

In 1978, the municipality rented the castle as its town hall. Renovation work followed, and the municipal administration moved from Hochstätt to Schechen.

Mayor Max Franz negotiated with the Zwicknagel family about the purchase of the castle. Finally, he reached an agreement with the owner Brigitte Wasum, mayor of Bacharach. On January 20, 1987, a purchase agreement was concluded, with a purchase price of 1.2 million Marks. The renovation and conversion of the former castle then followed until autumn 1989.
