Schackenborg Castle

The origins of Schackenborg date back to 1233, when it was first mentioned as Møgeltønderhus, a fief of the Bishop of Ribe. Following the Reformation in 1536, the estate fell to the Danish Crown. In 1659, the German-Danish Field Marshal Hans von Schack took over the fief. For his services in the Dano-Swedish War, King Frederik III granted him ownership of the estate in 1661. As the existing castle was dilapidated and outdated, Schack largely demolished it and erected a Baroque castle in its place, which he named Schackenborg. Around 1750, the castle received Rococo embellishments, and around 1770, the original farm buildings were demolished. The estate remained in the possession of the Schack family for over ten generations until the last count sold the property to the Danish Royal Family in 1978. In 1993, Prince Joachim, the second son of Queen Margrethe, took over the castle and estate after completing an agricultural education.

Schackenborg Castle is situated in Møgeltønder in the Tønder district of the Syddanmark region, Denmark, at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Schackenborg Castle is now privately owned and serves as Prince Joachim's residence and workplace. The castle park is accessible to visitors at certain times.
