Săvârșin Castle

To be privately owned

In western Romania, nestled in the Banat region, lies Săvârșin Castle, a historic edifice once built by Hungarian nobility. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction, and it served as a residence for both royal and dictatorial figures.

History+

Săvârșin Castle was constructed in the 17th century, specifically between 1650 and 1680, by the Hungarian noble family Forray. As early as 1514, Baron Andreas Forray had the extensive 6.5-hectare park, complete with a lake, laid out. In 1784, the castle suffered significant damage during the Horea uprising in Transylvania. The rebels under Peter Baciu also abducted the then lord of the castle, Andras Forray (sen.), who was later ransomed by Emperor Joseph II. The building acquired its current appearance in 1870. Until 1932, the castle was owned by Carol Hunyady before passing to the Corvin company. In 1943, King Michael I acquired the shares from the main shareholder Anton Mocioni and became the owner. After the king's abdication on December 30, 1947, the castle was nationalized and later used by dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu as a hunting lodge. On June 1, 2001, the property was returned to the royal family.
