Salzau Castle
The Schleswig-Holstein State Cultural Center Salzau at Gut Salzau in Fargau-Pratjau in the district of Plön was a meeting place supported by the Cultural Foundation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and an important part of the cultural infrastructure of the federal state.
Salzau is an old knight's seat in Holstein, named after the knight Otto von Salzau, first mentioned in the second half of the 13th century, when Queen Mechthild, the widow of King Abel of Denmark, left him 30 marks. From the 18th to the 20th century, Salzau was owned by the Counts Blome and, after 1945, passed by inheritance into the possession of the Counts von Thun und Hohenstein. The manor house burned down in the 19th century and was rebuilt in 1881 by Otto von Blome. The architect of the new building was Joseph Eduard Mose.
Since February 26, 2011, the estate has been for sale. Events, e.g. of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and the JazzBaltica Festival, have no longer taken place since then.
State Cultural Center+
Seminars, conferences, artist meetings, theater performances, antique and art fairs, and readings were held at the State Cultural Center.
The State Cultural Center was also used as a venue for the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and for the JazzBaltica Festival (most recently in 2011). It was the seat of the festival's international orchestra academy, founded by Leonard Bernstein in 1987. Another task of the center was to coordinate activities in the Ars Baltica project. The rehearsal phases of the State Youth Orchestra also took place here.
In 2011, the State Cultural Center Salzau was dissolved – the reasons for this included the failure to develop Salzau into a conference and cultural center with hotel operations in order to achieve sufficient occupancy.
