Sallgast Castle
Sallgast Castle is located in the town of Sallgast, 13 kilometers southeast of Finsterwalde in Brandenburg.
It was built in the 12th century as a moated castle. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged by Swedish troops but not captured. It was converted into a four-winged castle. The extensive castle park was laid out around 1880 by Robert von Loebenstein and expanded in 1911. The castle was restored from 1911 to 1912 according to plans by Bodo Ebhardt. Sallgast Castle and Palace had frequently changing owners throughout its history.
In 1989, the village and Sallgast Castle were threatened with demolition, as a neighboring lignite opencast mine was to be expanded in the direction of the village. After German reunification in 1990, these plans were not pursued further.
Today, Sallgast Castle is used, among other things, by the municipal administration and as a restaurant. The castle park is generally accessible.
On September 11, 2008, a fire broke out in the castle's roof truss, but was extinguished in time.
