Salenstein Castle

Schloss Salenstein+
Geschichte+
Mittelalter
The castle was built in the 11th century. In 1092, the Lords of Salenstein were first mentioned in documents as ministeriales of Reichenau Abbey. Like the abbey, they became impoverished in the following centuries and had to sell Salenstein in 1375. Over the next seven hundred years, the castle passed through many hands and was rebuilt and extended several times. In 1869, Baron Alexander von Herder, grandson of Johann Gottfried Herder, bought it. He renovated the castle in the English Neo-Gothic style.
Neuzeit
Since 1979, the castle has been owned by the Winterthur "Foundation for Art, Culture and History" of Bruno Stefanini. He is repeatedly criticized in connection with the castle because he lets it fall into disrepair.
