Säfstaholm Castle

The origins of Säfstaholm date back to the 15th century when it was still a village called Sävsta. Part of the village was donated to Julita Abbey in 1454, while the rest went to Johan Månsson. In 1604, the Crown confiscated the estate, but it soon passed into the possession of Anna, the wife of Colonel Erik Soop, who received tax exemption for war services rendered. Anna bequeathed Säfstaholm to her cousin Åke from the noble family Natt och Dag, who in turn left it to his brother-in-law Gustaf Larsson Sparre. The latter had the present castle built in 1666, with Erik Dahlberg, who lived nearby, likely being the architect. After a fire in 1762, the castle was rebuilt in 1815 with minor alterations. At the beginning of the 19th century, Gustaf Trolle-Bonde, known as “the blind Excellency,” who owned the castle from 1791 to 1855, transformed the surroundings into an English country residence. He laid out a park, cultivated new areas, and housed an extensive collection of art and books. Many artists of that era lived nearby and immortalized the estate in their works. After its sale by Gustaf's grandnephew in 1920, the castle fell into disrepair, and the collection was dispersed. From 1935 to 1968, it served as a school for mentally disabled children. Since 1986, it has belonged to the municipality of Vingåker, which carried out extensive renovations in the 1980s to restore its historical character.

Säfstaholm Castle is located in Vingåker, within the municipality of the same name in the Södermanland region, Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approx. 23 meters above sea level.

Today, Säfstaholm Castle serves as a cultural institution. Visitors can explore the restored rooms, which reflect the spirit of Gustaf Trolle-Bonde's era. Art exhibitions are regularly held, continuing the castle's tradition as a center for art and culture.
