Rothenthurn Castle
Rothenthurn Castle is located above the village of the same name on the southern slope of the Insberg in the municipality of Spittal an der Drau.
The first verifiable owner was Hans Kreutzer in 1478. In the mid-16th century, the castle was owned by the Khevenhüller family, who entrusted it to the castle steward Ehrenholdt Eschey. In the 18th century, the owners were the mining families Eineter and Perscher. In 1882, the castle was owned by the Normann-Ehrenfels family. The current owner, the Pereira-Arnstein family, operates an accommodation business in the castle.
Architectural Description+
The oldest part of the complex is the central wing, called the "Red Tower," whose core probably dates back to the 11th century. An underground connecting passage leads from it to Maximiliansburg. Otherwise, the building was mainly erected in the 16th and 17th centuries. The elongated building consists of several elongated two- and three-story wings. A roof turret rises above the central wing. Above the Renaissance portal in the west wing is the coat of arms of the Khevenhüller family. The historicizing main portal on the central wing dates from 1882.
Castle Chapel+
The chapel in the eastern main wing is dedicated to Saint Barbara. The three-bay, cross-rib vaulted room was built in 1644 by Ehrenholdt Eschey and frescoed in 1737 under Matthias Ferdinand Eineter. The Coronation of Mary is plastically depicted on the altar from 1710. To the sides stand the statues of Saints Barbara and Dorothea.
North of the castle is a tomb for Count Konstantin Normann-Ehrenfels († 1882) in the form of a three-sided open arbor.
