Rosenhof Castle

Rosenhof, also known as Neidenberg, is a former noble residence in Graz that was later expanded into a castle. Its history dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Today, it is owned by the City of Graz.

The castle stands on Graz's Rosenberg.

Originally, the castle was a farm and was purchased by Jakob Stockinger on October 17, 1533. He expanded the farm into a noble residence and also freed it from servitude. Jakob's children sold the farm on Rosenberg on October 23, 1604, to Ciniak Schröckhinger zu Neblau, who further expanded it. On September 26, 1606, Schröckhinger zu Neblau received permission from Archduke Ferdinand to name the property Neidenberg. Around that time, a small keep was also erected. In 1620, the seat passed to Anna Lukretia Kuglmann. In 1634, she handed over the property, already named Rosenhof, to Georg Caspar Auer.

The Auer family owned the estate until 1687, when it passed to Ferdinand Leopold Graf Breuner. He was followed by several other owners, before the property was publicly auctioned in 1721 and bought by Josef Gottlieb Freiherr von Hingenau. In 1728, Georg Jakob von Deyerlsberg acquired the property. The von Deyerlsbergs handed it over on July 1, 1745, to the Jesuits residing in Graz, who accommodated guests there. After the Graz order was dissolved in 1773, Rosenhof became state property. In 1780, it was used militarily, but it turned out to be unsuitable as a barracks. On September 2, 1781, the castle was publicly auctioned and acquired by the then governor, Count Ferdinand Attems. He had the seat registered in the land register as Rosenhayn. The castle remained in the possession of the Attems family until 1880. They were followed by several owners, before Rosenhof came into the possession of the City of Graz on December 28, 1928.
