Ronneburg Castle

Ronneburg Castle was built around 1200 by the Knights of Ronneburg. The name meant something like "Castle on the Rinne (the stream)". In 1209, Knight Heinrich von Ronneburg is mentioned as the lord of the castle. After this, ownership passed to the bailiffs of Weida, who owned the castle until 1244. After this, ownership passed to the Lords of Reuss, to the Wettins, at the end of the 15th century as a fief to the von Ende family, and in 1517 to the von Wildenfels family. In 1522, the castle was expanded under Anarg von Wildenfels - the Knights' Hall was built. In 1651, the castle was renovated under Friedrich Wilhelm II. In 1662, the castle was extended by a half-timbered floor. In the 18th century, the round keep was demolished. From 1826 to 1918, the castle was owned by the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. In the mid-19th century, a new district court building was constructed in the upper part of the complex. In 1896, the castle was rebuilt on the walls of the old castle. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. In 1991, the castle was renovated.
