Roith Castle

Roith Castle (Gmunden), also known as Freisitz Roith, is located in the city of Gmunden in the district of Gmunden in Upper Austria (Traunsteinstraße 87). An earlier name for the castle was Sardagnia.

The estate "in der Reuth" was owned by the Polheim family in the 16th century; in 1587, Hans Paumgartner owned it. The small castle was probably built around 1596. Emperor Rudolf II elevated Roith to a noble Freisitz. In 1597, Roith passed from Baron Friedrich von Pollheim to Siegmund Jäger and his wife Margaretha. Then Roith came to the Seeauer von Hallstatt family. From them, it was either purchased or given as a life annuity to Georg Albert Plaß von Mühlleiten. After Plaß, the Seeauer family, who had by then risen to the rank of counts, became owners of Roith again. In 1719, Count Josef Ehrenreich von Seeau, city pastor of Gmunden, sold it to the Gmunden citizen Johann Adam Aigner. Through his daughter, Roith came by marriage to the imperial customs clerk Johann Paul Lichtenauer. After his death, the widow sold the property in 1753 to Cavalry Captain Jakob von Holzofen, who in turn resold it in 1770 to Franz Xaver Gangl. Since he died without heirs, Roith was publicly auctioned and thus came to the Gmunden citizen Johann Nepomuk Hörner. Hörner was ennobled in 1814 and bore the name "Edler von Roith". His heirs sold Roith in 1843 to the Viennese notary Gustav Faber, whose wife was a great-granddaughter of Hörner. From 1968, the owners were Franz and Rosi Prechtl, who transformed Roith into a castle hotel. The hotel then came to the Asamer Group, with a renovation carried out in 2008, but the hotel was spun off from the holding in 2013 and taken over by Hans Asamer.
