Ried Castle

Duchess Mechthild, wife of the Bavarian Duke Ludwig the Strict, gifted Rezensried to the Cistercian monastery of Fürstenfeld over 700 years ago. In 1572, the castle church and a short time later the castle right next to it were built as a summer residence for the abbots and monks. In 1644, renovations were carried out by Abbot Martin Dallmayr. A planned expansion failed due to the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War. In 1792, the castle was extended by another floor by Abbot Balduin Helm according to plans by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi. Through the secularization in 1803, the castle was auctioned off to Colonel von Schönberg. The inventory was auctioned off by farmers, fishermen, and craftsmen. From 1914 to 1940, the castle was owned by Alfred Ploetz.
