Rheda Castle

Rheda Castle is a moated castle in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Gütersloh district, North Rhine-Westphalia.

A castle complex was first mentioned in 1170. In 1365, the complex was inherited by Otto von Tecklenburg. Through marriage, the castle and the Lordship of Rheda came into the possession of the Counts of Bentheim. The castle is still used as a residence by the family of the Prince of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda and parts of it are accessible as a museum.

The buildings include a 13th-century chapel tower, a Staufer gate tower and a 14th-century residential tower, a residential wing in the Weser Renaissance style with a gallery, and the main wing in simple Baroque style, as well as numerous economic and ancillary buildings also built in the 18th century (oil mill, grain mill, stables with carriage house, gatehouse, comedy house, stables).

Outside the castle island, there has been a geometric garden since 1623. In 1988, it was restored according to 19th-century plans and reflects Neo-Baroque garden art.

Guided tours take place in summer. Attractions include a carriage museum and a toy and costume collection, as well as the orangery in the castle park. The castle is owned by the Princely House of Bentheim-Tecklenburg.
