Retzhof Castle is located in the municipality of Wagna in the district of Leibnitz in Styria.

A former farm in Leutarn (Leitring) was handed over as a fief by the Archbishop of Salzburg to his vassal Guntherus de Leytarn in 1318. However, the actual Retzhof was not located at the site of the castle that exists today. In 1432, the Aflenzer family came into possession of the farm, before the Retzer family, subjects of the Lords of Graz and Trennstein, received the fief from the mid-15th century. In 1569, the farm was sold to a quartermaster named Michael Hueber. As early as 1595, the first liege lord, the Prince-Bishop of Salzburg Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, sold Retzhof to the Diocese of Seckau. After Bishop Martin Brenner, a counter-reformer, used it as his retirement home, it was subsequently managed by rapidly changing administrators. From 1918, the building came into public ownership. During the Second World War, Retzhof Castle was used as a regional leadership school for German Youth. The current owner of the castle is the State of Styria, which uses it as a folk education center. Numerous events take place there, including the Retzhofer Drama Prize, which is awarded by uniT.

Architecture+

Retzhof Castle, located east of Leibnitz near the old Mur riverbank, is a symmetrical four-wing complex arranged around a rectangular inner courtyard. To the east of the building complex is an ancillary courtyard with three wings. The corners of the building are emphasized by risalits. Particularly striking is the risalit in the west on a baroque central column above the ground floor. The arcades date from the 17th century, and the staircase and chapel from the early 18th century. The open, classical columned hall crowned by a gable was built in the 19th century. In the north corner are the remains of a very massive tower. Many stones from the Roman settlement Flavia Solva were used in the construction of the castle.
