Redwitz Castle

Redwitz Castle is located on the northeastern edge of the Upper Franconian town of Redwitz an der Rodach. After multiple destructions and reconstructions, it is now privately owned.

A castle already stood on the property from the mid-13th to the mid-14th century, built by a branch of the Marshals of Kunstadt. The first lord of the castle was either an Iring von Kunstadt (or von Redwitz) or an Erchinpert von Kunstadt (or von Redwitz).

At the end of the 13th century, the north wing was built as the first part of the present castle. The castle gradually gave way to the palace. In the German Peasants' War in 1525, one of the two Kemenates was burned down, the other significantly damaged. In the same year, Berthold von Redwitz rebuilt the castle. At the beginning of the 17th century, the southern building was erected. The expansion of the west wing with the courtyard arcades and the stair tower probably took place somewhat earlier. In 1697, the east wing was mentioned for the first time. In 1873, Baron Wilhelm Theodor von Redwitz sold the castle to the Horb brewery owner Johann Gampert. Since 1952, the castle has been owned by the Archdiocese of Bamberg. It is currently in private ownership.
