Radweg Castle

The castle was built by the Lords of Poppendorf. Later, ownership transferred to the Lords of Fuchsstatt.

The first documentary mention of the castle dates back to 1122. At that time, it was a modest fortified tower, strategically located on a hill overlooking the valley. The Lords of Poppendorf, a local noble family, recognized the strategic importance of the location and began to expand the fortifications. In the 13th century, a ring wall and a keep were added, transforming the tower into a formidable castle.

In 1480, through marriage, the castle came into the possession of the Lords of Fuchsstatt. This period marked a significant transformation for the castle. Under their patronage, the medieval fortress was gradually converted into a representative Renaissance residence. Large windows were installed, the interiors were lavishly decorated, and a chapel was added. The Fuchsstatt family also established extensive gardens around the castle, which were famous throughout the region.

The 17th century saw further baroque modifications, particularly under Count Leopold von Fuchsstatt. He commissioned renowned artists and architects to redesign several halls and add an impressive grand staircase. However, the Thirty Years' War and subsequent conflicts took their toll on the family's finances. The castle began to fall into disrepair, and parts of the once-magnificent gardens became overgrown.

In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times, often serving as a summer residence for wealthy industrialists. In 1950, the castle was acquired by the state and underwent extensive restoration work. Today, it houses a museum and is open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into its rich history.
