Raczynski Castle, also known as Marienberg, is a historicist castle building majestically situated on the northwest slope of the Gebhartsberg in Bregenz, Vorarlberg. Originally referred to as a "villa," it is the last castle built in Vorarlberg and impresses with its Neo-Rococo architecture, reminiscent of the splendor of past eras.

History+

The construction of Raczynski Castle began in 1874 when the wealthy Count Carl Eduard Nalecz-Raczynski acquired an extensive property in Bregenz. For his wife, Princess Caroline Theresia von Oettingen-Wallerstein, he had this impressive estate built between 1875 and 1877 according to plans by architect Stefan Tragl. The completed castle villa, a gift for the Countess's 47th birthday in 1878, became the center of a luxurious court and the scene of numerous social events. After the death of the Countess in 1898 and the Count a year later, his nephew Eduard Graf Nalecz-Raczynski inherited the property. In 1904, the Dominican Order acquired the castle, which thereafter served as a convent and school building under the name Marienberg. After being used as a lazaret and a home for French mothers and children during and after World War II, the Dominicans regained the property in 1946. A comprehensive renovation took place between 1976 and 1997.
