History of the Castle+
The castle was built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order. In the 14th century, the south wing was erected. A new construction took place in 1737-1738.
The Teutonic Order and the Founding+
The origins of the castle date back to the early 13th century. The Teutonic Order, a powerful spiritual knightly order, began with the construction of a fortified complex here. The strategic location on a hill offered ideal conditions for controlling the surrounding area.
First Construction Phase (13th Century)
During this period, the main castle with its mighty keep and the first defensive walls was built. The architecture was typical for the order's castles, characterized by robust stone construction and a focus on defensive capabilities.
Expansion in the 14th Century+
In the 14th century, the castle experienced significant expansion. The growing importance of the region and the need for more living and administrative space led to further construction measures.
Construction of the South Wing
The most notable addition during this period was the construction of the south wing. This wing provided additional residential chambers and possibly a new chapel. Architectural elements from this era show a transition from purely defensive structures to more comfortable living spaces.
Reconstruction in the 18th Century+
After centuries of use and various changes of ownership, the castle underwent a comprehensive reconstruction in the 18th century.
The Baroque Transformation (1737-1738)
Between 1737 and 1738, the castle was largely rebuilt. This reconstruction gave the complex its baroque appearance, which still characterizes it today. Many medieval elements were either removed or integrated into the new design. The focus was on representative rooms and a more modern living comfort for the then owners.
