Raben Steinfeld Castle

Raben Steinfeld was first mentioned in a document on January 11, 1410. But as early as 1160, a German castle was located here. The name is composed of "Raben" from the Raben family and "Steinfeld" from the very stony fields in the area (terminal moraine).

After the Thirty Years' War in 1648, the place became part of Mecklenburg. In 1679, ownership changed to Helmuth von Plessen and in 1683 to Duke Christian Louis I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1847, Raben Steinfeld became the demesne of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1881, the grand ducal stud farm opened. In 1886/87, under Duke Friedrich Franz III, the former hunting lodge was converted into a grand ducal summer residence. Later, the castle also served as a widow's residence. In 1945, the grand ducal family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

In 1946, an engineering school for forestry was founded in the castle, which was closed in 1995.
