Porrentruy Castle

High above the city of Porrentruy in the Swiss canton of Jura, the imposing Porrentruy Castle stands, a historic structure that once served as a residence for princely bishops and today is a living testament to the past.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 13th century when the first fortress was built. The oldest preserved part, the Tour Réfous, a distinctive round keep built in 1271, stems from this period. Between 1527 and 1792, the castle served as an important residence for the Prince-Bishops of Basel. Over the centuries, the complex underwent numerous transformations, with the 16th century being particularly formative. During this time, important sections such as the Résidence, the Chancellerie, and the Tour du Coq were added, significantly shaping its current appearance.
