Poppenreuth Castle

Poppenreuth Castle in Poppenreuth, a district of Waldershof, was founded by Hans (V.) Notthafft von Weißenstein. In 1541, he and his brother Friedrich III received the seat of Thumsenreuth and one third each of the then still habitable Weißenstein during an inheritance division. In 1547, he acquired Lorenz Würstl's farm in Poppenreuth and transformed it into a manor house because he "could not stay at Weißenstein due to great boredom." On October 13, 1766, Poppenreuth Castle, including its outbuildings, was destroyed by a fire. While the actual castle building, which probably stood in the middle of the spacious castle courtyard, was not rebuilt, the reconstruction of the farm buildings until August 1767 incurred costs of 2616 guilders. In January 1882, the castle buildings in Poppenreuth passed into the hands of Bianca Eiserhard from Waldenburg in Silesia through forced auction, and from her, via Privy Councillor of Commerce Gustav von Siegle, into the possession of the Barons von Gemmingen-Hornberg.
