Poplitz Castle

The area of present-day Poplitz was already settled in the 15th century, even though the old village of Poplitz later became deserted. Originally, it was the ancestral seat of the von Poplitz family, of whom Hans von Poplitz is known as a bailiff in Halle in the 15th century. After the extinction of this line, Lorenz von Krosigk acquired the lands from Tilo von Knebel in 1522. Poplitz was subsequently incorporated into the County of Alsleben and remained part of the Krosigk family's possessions. In 1612, Heinrich von Krosigk sold the property to Vollrad von Krosigk. Bernhard Friedrich von Krosigk, a descendant of Vollrad and progenitor of the Poplitz line, had the current castle built in 1671 on the foundations of an older manor house. He was also responsible for establishing the magnificent park and building a hospital for the needy in 1689. Bernhard Friedrich was also a prominent scholar who engaged in astronomy and ethnology, establishing observatories in Arkhangelsk and at the Cape of Good Hope. Later generations of the von Krosigk family, including Ferdinand Anton and Dedo, further shaped the estate through additions, agricultural innovations, and social commitment.
